BORO’S BREAKTHROUGH YEAR
Middlesbrough FC was 128 years old when the club finally came of age with its first significant silverware. There had been near misses during Bryan Robson’s time on Teesside but it was Steve McClaren that oversaw the breakthrough triumph that opened the door to Europe and some magical Maccarone nights down by the Riverside. Two goals in the first 7 minutes of the Cardiff final put ‘Boro on course and Gareth Southgate became their first captain ever to lift a major trophy.
